This situation calls for new imagined forms that might bridge the discontinuities which are at the root of the troubles we now need to face and “stay with” (Donna Haraway).

The anthropological considerations of Philippe Descola have tinged these artists’ consideration of form and texture as material experimentation with a sense of urgency. Indeed, in his book Les Formes du visible (Forms of the Visible), Descola elaborates a typology of modes of identification and relationship that does away with the nature/culture dichotomy. He suggests instead new criteria of differentiation: interiority and physicality, on the one hand, and resemblance and difference, on the other. In this new typology, an image is defined by any form of figuration that makes visible something that is not ordinarily visible. Images can thus express the way in which a collective represents restored relationships of continuity between humans and non-humans.

The artists taking part in RE:NATURE are themselves related thanks to the community that brings them together. Their usage of both abstraction and figuration as a means to explore a sense of place goes beyond visual materiality to challenge and rethink the modern vision of art as the imitation of a nature that would be external to us.

The exhibition sheds light on the role the ecological crisis has played in prompting artists to open up to other ways of perceiving and representing the world, ways that enables us to rethink our relationships with the beings and things that inhabit it.
